Spanning Time: Vermont's Covered Bridges
Published in Hardcover by New England Press (October, 1997)
Average review score:

BridgePros ReviewThis book gets a 10 out of 10 from BridgePros. At BridgePros.com we have been lucky enough to review some of the best products about bridges. This book just adds to the list. The information and pictures are wonderful. The book is laid out very well with 15 different tours to take of the bridges. The history of each bridge was researched well with all the source laid out nicely. This book has a great appendix for the bridge novice, including: A summary of the bridges, a covered bridge glossary, and a great explanation with pictures of the different bridge trusses, a section on the bridge builders, and finally a reading list. The book ends with a comprehensive index. This book is the first place you should look to learn about anything on Vermont's covered bridges and how to see them all! This reviewer traveled to Vermont in October 2000 to check out some of the tours listed in this book. They were laid excellent. Very good guide.
A wonderful book that I highly recommend! This extremely well written book contains a wealth of information and beautiful color photographs about all of the covered bridges in Vermont. The author has also drawn nice maps so that visitors can locate the bridges, which is very helpful. Anyone who is interested in covered bridges should own a copy of this fine book. I find it well worth the price and highly recommend it!

Starting with Shakespeare: Successfully Introducing Shakespeare to Children
Published in Paperback by Libraries Unlimited (March, 2000)
Average review score:

A superb addition to a Shakespeare reference collection.Starting With Shakespeare: Successfully Introducing Shakespeare To Children introduces students in grades K through 5 to "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; "Macbeth"; "Hamlet"; and "Romeo and Juliet". For each play, a complete historical background, introduction to the characters, and a simple retelling of the story is provided. A variety of integrated activities extend learning to history, geography, science, art, music, movement, math, and language arts. In addition, Starting With Shakespeare is enhanced with verses for memorization, a complete script for class performance, and a list of resources for further explorations and studies. Starting With Shakespeare is a superb addition to any school literary studies and theatrical studies reference library.
not just for little kidsI am a special education teacher in a middle school and I have used this book to bring the incredible stories of Shakespeare to my students. The activities were easily modified to meet the needs of older students, and I especially enjoyed the retellings of the plays since they contained debate and discussion questions. The students I teach were highly motivated to learn Shakespeare in this interactive way. This book makes Shakespeare accessible to everyone, not just the "highly gifted." My students will never forget the year we brought Romeo and Juliet to life. Now they are able follow the story line, understand the characters, and compare the play to West Side Story in the mainstream classroom. Amazing!

Stephen : Letters of Courage and Hope
Published in Paperback by Stephen's Hope Foundation (11 May, 2001)
Average review score:

Letter of Hope for Every HeartEach time I go back and read one of Stephen's poems I am reminded of the joy, wonder, love and hope that surrounds us every day. This young man was truly a gift of pure love. For every family who has a special needs child, I recommend this book. For every family that would like to help their children understand the person inside "the package" and see the heart, mind and soul of a special needs child, I recommend this book. For every person who has known that physical limitations cannot measure the depth of a soul, I recommend this book. For every person who has doubted and questioned if a mind, heart and soul exists inside a body wracked with physical limitations, I recommend this book. Read this book in conjunction with his mother's "Eagle Doctor: Stories of Stephen, My Child With Special Needs" to understand their path together and the miracle of their lives.
A Glorious Celebration of Love and Life...The beautiful poetry of Stephen Michael Nelson will capture your heart and enrich your faith. His words reflect a young man's dreams and aspirations unaffected by his lifelong contest against the physical ailments of cerebral palsy, epilepsy, asthma, and heart disease. Stephen reaches out to all of us with an offering of love, and a never ending amount of energy to fulfill life's dreams. It is obvious that he had no obstacles or limitations, and that we should not either. This book is a must read... as it is a glorious celebration of life and love.

Stochastic Modeling, Analysis and Simulation
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Higher Education (01 December, 1994)
Average review score:

A Thorough and Motivating Discussion of Stochastic ModelingAfter an introductory review of basic statistics, Professor Nelson does a superb job of leading the reader to a complete understanding of Markov chains, motivated by definition and discussion of Poisson processes. The difficult topic of stationarity is treated with exceptional clarity. Additionally, the author's care in categorizing the states of Markov chains (e.g., transient, recurrent, periodic, aperiodic, etc.) is commendably superb. Each chapter begins with a practical "workaday" problem illustrating the value of the material in that chapter. Carefully graded exercise sets augment the reader's understanding of the material. Extreme care has been taken to keep the necessary detailed notations and subscripts standard, clear, and free of typographical errors.
An Excellent book that combines theory and practiceThis is a book that takes you through the stochastic processes easy and step by step leading you to a greater knowledge of a complicated issue.

Stories of the Academy: Learning from the Good Mother (Counterpoints (New York, N.Y.), Vol. 187.)
Published in Paperback by Peter Lang Publishing (June, 2002)
Average review score:

A splendid surprise!I expected to be enlightened about the travails of women in academic life (and about the "kindness of strangers" in the mentoring system. But I didn't expect to be emotionally moved by the stories and the valiant spirit of the women behind them! This book offers a completely humanistic prescription to many of the ills which have, since time immemorial, infected higher education. I plan to buy a copy and give it to my department chairperson (if he reads it, he may at least learn how far short of the mark he and his colleagues are and what he might do to improve the situation at our school). Kudos to the writers of this book and to those who allowed their stories to be told.
This book could transform the Academy.Presented with passionate conviction and eloquent wisdom, these life-stories show that the Groves of Academe need not be the heartless and treacherous mind-fields that they often have been. There is another way, a better way. Spore et al. offer an alternative, person-centered vision that challenges us to understand that professionalism need not exclude compassion, that the quest for scholastic excellence does not preclude the need for enabling (and yes, ennobling) nurturing. Whether you are male or female, already involved in higher education or planning to be, this book is essential reading.

The Student Bible Atlas
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (June, 1990)
Average review score:

The Student Bible AtlasI have been looking for just this kind of atlas for my 5th and 6th grade Sunday School class. The main thing I like about it is that it uses the same map of Israel and shows it at the various periods. Most atlases and Sunday School curricula show various maps instead of one map that changes over time. I liked the comparison maps of the empires. The comments and illustrations with each map are also useful.
Excellent Companion to Bible for Both Child and Adult! This is definitely a worthy purchase if you have a child and as well if you (admit it) still get mixed up a bit with Middle East geography, especially when it comes to what an area was called years ago and what its present-day name is. When you read a passage to your child, show him with this each time where that scripture was taking place at that time period (the atlas shows name changes and political boundaries in different time segments). You both will have a much better understanding of what was taking place where and when.
